Socio-Economic Indicators and Democratic Consolidation in Pakistan: An Analysis
Abstract
This paper looks to explore the relationship between socioeconomic indicators and democratic consolidation in contemporary Pakistan. Most of the indicators are extracted from modernization theory and impact on human development. These indicators refer to interaction of state and society in a country. It is argued that a healthy interaction leads to democratic consolidation while anything less would result in erosion. These indicators include per capita income, population, size of middle class, educational attainment, industrialization, urbanization, income distribution (Gini Coefficient), human development index (HDI). This is simply an analytical paper which analyzes the modernization theory. Based on the results and analysis of interaction between state and society, Pakistan faces a danger of erosion of democracy. If a state want to achieve Comfort comes and an upward trend in its growth is required to cut on non-material rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of association and access to alternate platforms of information
