Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Teacher Effectiveness of Secondary School Teachers
Abstract
This study was designed to measure the relationship between emotional intelligence and teacher effectiveness. Emotional intelligence is an ability to monitor personal and others’ emotions before taking some action or showing some behavior. Teacher effectiveness is a construct that measures how frequently teachers perform certain roles based on some standards. It was a correlational study. Using multistage sampling technique, the researchers randomly selected 40 male and female high schools (strata) in Okara district. Later, all 380 teachers of English and Mathematics in these schools were sampled for the study. Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (α=.82) and School Self-Assessment Instrument for Teacher Evaluation (α=.86) were used as tools for data collection. Pearson correlation coefficient demonstrated that emotional intelligence and teacher effectiveness were strongly correlated with each other. Moreover, female teachers demonstrated better in emotional intelligence than male teachers, while male teachers were better than female teachers in their score on teacher effectiveness. It was recommended that female teachers may be given training to improve their effectiveness on teacher quality factors, while male teachers need to be more intelligence while demonstrating their emotions.
